Word as email editor

I am trying to get Word as my email editor. I followed the directions given
by the assistant but it says Word is busy or can't be found so I'll have to
use Outlook. I got it to work on my old computer so what's the deal? Word
opens on my computer, why can't I use it as my email editor?
