Word as email editor

I have Outlook 2000 and Word 2000 loaded on my laptop. I've selected Word as my email editor. If I leave my laptop running for more than one day I receive an error that Resources are insufficient to run Word, and it must be shut down. I'm assuming that a Winword.exe needs to run every time I open an email, and after a while the system just runs out of space and needs to shut down. I looked in task manager and saw several instances of Winword running in Processes. Is reboot the only solution?

No, you can use the Task Manager to delete the multiple instances of
Winword.exe.

Just stopping the additional instances of Winword doesn't fix the problem. Outlook is crashing while I have Word selected as my email editor. It sounds like the only solution is not to use Word as the email editor.
