Word 97 - updates

D

Diana

I have a friend that is using Word 97 and is having that dreaded problem
with Red X's everywhere in her document. She has reinserted them about 5
times. When she reopens the file the next day, many of the images are
replaced wth Red X's. It's driving her (and me crazy). She claims to have
installed SR1, but when I look at the version, it's not reporting the
update. She does own lots of software and does updates all the time, so I
don't believe it's anything she's doing.

She's using Windows ME. Is there a known problem where the update for Word
97 isn't reporting itself? She's now thinking of uninstalled Word 97 and
reinstalling, but I'm not sure it's worth that.

PS ... She's has lots of ram and lots of disk space. She's running a very
fast system and it's running pretty clean.

Any thoughts.

You are absolutely right. That's why I reported the details as I did,
because I had already gone to that site. I'm thinking it must be a problem
with how Word97 handles the images. I can't image having to reinsert those
images so many times without them holding.

Thanks for your efforts.
Diana

No, you're in the right place. You can see
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/RedX.htm, but I don't think it's
going to tell you anything you don't already know.

It certainly sounds as if the SR-1 update is still needed, but it's pretty
hard to troubleshoot these issues remotely, as you appear to be trying to
do.

You are right and it's what I suspected, but she insisted that she installed
it. I suspected she downloaded but didn't install but she still insisted.

She decided to uninstall Word97, then reinstall it, then re-add SR1 (her son
helped). It worked. I'm so glad. It was most frustrating trying to fix it
from a remote location, like you say.

Now I'm trying to stop her from direct formatting, but I think I'll lose
that battle. I also tried to get her to do an autogenerated TOC (she typed
it and is sticking with it). In all of this Suzanne, I have to give her
lots of credit (and I give her all kinds of credit and kudos) ... she turns
80 in January and is doing this stuff. She curses MS hourly (lol). Her
document is almost 400 pages. I just hope I'm still able to do stuff like
that at her age. It's funny and frustrating all at the same time.

Thanks. DianaH

I am totally in agreement. If I can hang in for 20 more years (and learn as
much about Word every day as I am doing now), I will at least be better off
than your almost-80-year-old friend.
