Word 2007: Manual document formats being auto added as a new style

N

Neil C

I have created a document template with a customised style set and have added
the styles to the quick style gallery. If I manually format text in the
template (document) then the format change is automatically added as a style
in the style window. E.g. If I enter text (based on Normal style) and
change the font size to 48 pt then a new style 48 pt is added in the style
Window.

How do I stop this please? I can't figure out what I have inadvertently
changed or done wrong to cause this!

Thanks.

Office button, Word Options, Advanced tab, Editing options, remove the
check
next to Keep track of formatting.

Go to Office button > Word Options > Advanced > Editing options and uncheck the
option "Keep track of formatting".

And note that an entry such as Normal + 48 pt isn't really a style, but a
style (Normal in this case) + direct formatting.

Another approach, which might work better: In the Styles pane, click the Options
link at the bottom. In the dialog, under "Select formatting to show as styles",
uncheck any or all three of the options.

The difference is this: When you turn off "Keep track of formatting", you also
lose the ability to "select all N instances" in the right-click menu of a style
in the Styles pane. If you leave it turned on, but don't show formatting as
separate styles, you'll still have that ability.

As I discovered when I was rewriting
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/RevealCodes.htm, the Style Inspector is
useless if you don't have "Keep track of formatting" enabled, but there is
no reason to disable it in Word 2007 because, as you point out, you can
choose not to display "formatting" in the Styles task pane.

"Selecting formatting to show as styles" under Options in the Styles pane and
unchecking all 3 of the options has resolved my problem/error. Thank you
very much. And thank you also for the very prompt responses.
