Word 2007 doesn't Save Word Documents without and Extension

I amended an MS Word file that did not have a file extension. I saved the
file [CTRL]+ and closed the document only to later discover that the
changes were lost. I was using Word 2007 at the time - and I have reproduced
the problem again today. I have since made the same changes to the same file
using Word 2003 and the file (without an extension) saves perfectly. Has
anyone else had this experience when using Word 2007.

how did you create the file originally?

FWIW, I just created a new 2007 Word document (containing only 2
paragraphs); I then saved, closed, renamed (deleting the ".docx"), and
reopened it; added some content, saved, closed, and again renamed it to
*.docx. The changes are there after opening it the next time.
