To add to Patrick's reply if what you're looking to do is to send an email from Word you have a couple of approaches you can use.
A. If you want to send your open document as an attachment to an Outlook email you can use
Office Button[file]=>Send=>Send as Email
to open a new window with the Outlook Email Editor (Outlook no longer uses Word as its editor) and you can access the
Contacts/Address Books there. Clicking the 'Office button' while in the email editor gives you other Outlook choices, but while
they're not greyed out, many of them will give you a 'close the existing message first' type dialog if you try to use them
b. If you want to use Word's 'envelope' (email header) from prior versions, and send your document, that feature is still available,
but not as a default Ribbon or Office Button menu choice. You can use
Office Button[file]==>Word Options=>Customization=>Keyboard
go to the 'Commands not in the Ribbon' category, locate the
EmailEnvelope
command choice and assign a keyboard shortcut to it. You can then toggle it at will when needed and access the Addresss book
through that method. (You can also add the Email Envelope to your Quick Access Toolbar from the Customization dialog 'Commands not
in the Ribbon' category as well.

using the feedback tool from the link below.
On the Mailmerge issue you may want to include some additional detail on the steps you're using to see if anyone else can reproduce
the same issue.

How do I insert a single address from the Outlook address book into Word
2007? The only way I can see is to use mailmerge which is a bit of overkill
for one address and besides which mailmerge from Outlook Address Book simply
locks Word 2007 Beta up for me. >>
