Word 2003 some commands are greyed out

Today, my Word 2003 program is crippled. I can no longer cut, copy or paste.
These commands are greyed out. I can open files but I cannot save them. The
Tools/Options command is greyed out. I have restarted the program and
restarted the computer. I have tried various Word documents. Excel and Excel
files function normally. Any ideas how this happened and how to fix it?
