WORD 2003 Remote User unable to open .doc on network share

I have a wireless remote client unable to open (by double clicking in
explorer) WORD 2003 doc files on a network share unless she opens WORD first.
If the client does not do this first, WORD will clock for long periods of
time eventually failing to open the document.

There are no messages. The client is using a DELL D630 Laptop. The file path
is G:\Private\SM-PSA\FILES - KAREN\Solutions Services
PSA\whatever-document.doc

She is able to open (by double clicking in explorer) .pdf and .xls files
with no problem. Client tells me up until a couple weeks ago, this method
worked with no issue.

Is there anything you can suggest I try other than have WORD open and
minimized.

what happens when she tries double-clicking a DOC file that's saved on
her local HD?
