Word 2003 chokes Intellimouse?

I’ve noticed that every so often the scrolling feature of my Intellimouse wheel
partly disappears in Word 2003. I say ‘partly’ because it still works if the
pointer is on the scrollbar, but if it’s in the visible body of the document,
spinning the wheel either has no effect or (bizarrely) scrolls the document
*sideways*.

Closing and reopening Word fixes this, but only for a while. I haven’t noticed
any pattern in what makes the behavior return. I've reinstalled the
Intellipoint software with no change. This happens only in Word, and only since
upgrading to 2003. I've had it happen with both the Optical and the vanilla
Intellimice

Today I gave an Intellimouse (Optical) as a gift to friend who’d been working in
Word 2003 for some months using an ordinary (but wheel-enabled) mouse. Tonight
she called me to describe the exact problem I’d been having. Thinking this over
for a moment, I attached an old non-Intellimouse (but wheel-enabled) mouse to my
PC and worked for several hours without the scrolling misbehaving. Normally
with the Intellimouse it would have happened at least a few times in that period.

Other than this, I vastly prefer the Intellimouse for its extra features, but
what could explain the scrolling problem, which seems to happen ONLY when an
Intellimouse is in use.

Hers and mine are 2 rather different PCs (not even the same brand). The only
relevant similarity is that both are running Word 2003 and Windows XP.

Any clues? It’s quite inconvenient during an intense editing session to have to
exit Word and reopen it just to get this feature back.

Microsoft's Intellimouse software has always been crap. Often it won't work
right in MS applications, particularly the scrolling feature. You can try
using Logitech Mouseware drivers instead. Uninstall your Intellimouse
software, reboot and install Mouseware. You may lose some features and gain
stability in others. You decide which is better for you.
