Word 2000/2003 - "Corrupt Document" containing Track Changes

A user has revised a 20-25 page document in Word 2000 using Track Changes.
The document was emailed (Outlook 2003) to a recipient who is using Word
2003. When the recepient opened the document in Word 2003 he received the
following error:

Word was unable to read this document. It may be corrupt.
Try one of the following:
*Open and Repair the file.
*Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.
(file name listed)
Show Help >>

We are able to open the document in 2000 but not in 2003. If we accept the
changes in Word 2000 and then open the document in 2003, we do not receive
the error message. Also, I was able to open the document in Word 2003 using
by the recover text option.

Can anyone shed light on this problem? If we did not have Word 2000, how
would we resolve this issue.

Did you try the Open and Repair process as mentioned? That has
generally worked for us.

I was able to resolve the problem. According Microsoft's knowledge base, this
is a known issue. This link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889409/en-us
provides more detailed information. According to the article, this problem
was resolved with Office 2003 SP2, but the hotfix (below) needs to be
enabled. After applying the 'hotfix' I was able to open the Word 2000
document (containing track changes) in Word 2003 without receiving the error
message.
