Won't scan "C" drive for errors.

When I go to "My Computer" and highlight the "C" drive
and then go to properties.
Under Tools - "Error-checking" This option will check
the volume for errors. When I click "check now"----
nothing happens. I cannot get the system to scan the "C"
drive for errors.

Can anyone tell me what to do to get it to scan?
