Won't resolve FQDN

S

Sarah

In a forest, machines in either company.com or uk.company.
com cannot resolve the FQDN of a machine in usa.company.
com, though it will resolve the name. Therefore it will
resolve Fred, but not Fred.usa.company.com. However, Fred.
usa.company.com can resolve Shirley.uk.company.com.

What on earth is going on?

are you using different DNS server for all the zones? I presume yes. If
that's the case, then the problem is very likely to be that you have not
properly delegated the usa.company.com zone from company.com. If you go to
the company.com zone, you should see a funny-looking folder called usa.
Click on that and you should see the name of the DNS servers responsible for
usa.company.com listed. If you don't see the folder or don't see the
NameServers, try creating a delegation for the "usa" child-domain.

To add, possibly the search suffix can also be a factor.

Thanks all. It seemed that I had an out of date subzone for
the usa domain rather than a delegation. Once I'd deleted
the zone and created a delegation it all worked.

Thank you!
