Won't power down after new install of XP

Just tried a fresh install of XP Pro on my old Presario
5220 (recommended after the upgrade didn't do the trick)
and the machine will not power down (sits on Windows
Shutting Down screen) or allow me to configure Standby.
The BIOS was updated before the install. ACPI and APM
settings do not exist in the System Device settings.
Since it's a fresh install, obviously there are no device
drivers to conflict with XP. System had no problem with
Standby or shut down when it was Win98.

Any thoughts? thanks.
