I've been having the same exact problem that has been posted before:

OK, I think this happened after installing some updates to Windows, but now
whenever I go and import movie files into Windows Movie Maker, I can't play
the files. The video doesnt load over to the right side preview window. So I
cant edit the video.

There were no answers as to how to fix this problem, has anyone came up with
any answers for this yet? I am using movie maker v2.1 and my computer is up
to date, I think it got messed up after a windows update/ when 2.1 was
installed- but I have no idea as I havent used movie maker in quite awhile
and just realized it is broken now.

Hi,

I have had problems with crashes, transferring movies back to DV tape, etc.
I restored the PC to a point before SP2 and it works fine with MM2.0
available standalone.

If you don't have a restore point, you'll have to do what I had to do
initially which is to rebuild the entire OS from scratch.

You can try doing the usual things:

Reinstall or install the following:
1. The latest stable release of your graphics card driver
2. DirectX 9c
3. Windows Media Encoder 9
4. Windows Media Player

Try to be patient with the installs. If it prompts to re-boot during the
process do not skip it.
