Won't join Windows 2000 domain

This computer is multi-boot Win98/Win2000 and each one can log onto the
Windows 2000 server on a small network. After adding WinXP however I cannot
get it to join the Windows 2000 Server domain. Is there some change to the
default network settings on the XP client required to get this to work?

derng,

Remove the computer account you created in Active Directory for the PC.
Logon at the PC as a member of the local Administrators group (usually the
local Administrator account)
Ensure that you are pointing at a DNS server that is servicing the Domain.
(one that has all the SRV records etc for the DCs)
Right click my computer ... Properties ... Computer Name ... Change...
Domain name - enter the fully qualified domain name (e.g. AD.company.com)
You will be prompted to supply a account to add the machine to the domain
Use a Domain Administrator account.
Enter it in the form DomainName\Administrator (where DomainName is the
NetBIOS name of the domain you are about to join)
and the password.

Any further problems are probably related to DNS resolution etc.
See the Help and Support with the Search phrase join domain
It has a number of troubleshooting steps.

When I ping the server in order to get a response I have to include the
server name as in servername.domainname.local.

When adding the Windows 2000 client to the domain it worked to enter
domainname. I now log in with (e-mail address removed). On the XP client
however I have tried entering every combination of
servername.domainname.local, domainname, domainname.local, and all of these
various combinations combined with /Adminstrator and password. When I tried
the troubleshooting steps you referred me to that is when I discovered that
I need to enter the servername.domainname.local to get a response. Should I
be able to just enter domainname.local? On the server there it does seem to
have reverselookup enabled.

I'm not sure I understand where you are having the problem.
Are you unable to enter the Domain\Administrator and the password to
authenticate as an account that has the right permissions to add your
machine to the Domain ??
Either the Fully Qualified Domain name\Administrator or NetBIOS
domainname\Administrator should work.

When working through the wizard from choosing Network ID it is getting as
far as trying to add the computer to the domain after having appeared to
accept the user login. I am trying every combination of server/domain name
that I am aware of and the error is "The specified domain either does not
exist or could not be contacted." The dialog login screen has three lines
for User name, Password, and Domain.

Do you mean the login dialog after you have rebooted your PC after it has
joined the domain or the one where you are required to provide credentials
of an account that has the necessary rights to add the machine to the domain
during the joining process.

If after the domain join then you can supply the login in a number of ways

Username
password
NetBIOS Domain name
or
username@fqd
password
(The Domain box goes grey when you type @ in the login name)

If you cannot get in then you have a name resolution problem - check WINS
and DNS again or you are just not using the right account from the Domain

One thing to do is drop down the list where it says Domain - this will force
it to fresh and pick up all Domains and trusted Domains before you attempt
to logon

If at the credentials to add the machine - You can use
NetBIOSDomainname\Account - I have found this most effective.
There is NO box for Domain name - on that dialog box.

To add the PC to the Domain

System Properties
Computer Name (tab)
Change ... (button)

Computer Name
(This should already have the PC name in it -- ClientXP) -- do not change
the name and join the domain - change the name first if that is what you
want to do

Member of
Domain:
NAME1 or name1.local (both will work)
But you might as well use NAME1

Computer Name Changes
Enter the name and password of an account witrh permissions to join the
domain

User name : NAME1\Administrator
Password : "whatever"

If this does not work then you have Name Resolution issues with DNS and WINS
in your setup.
Sort this out first - look at browsing - this may point you to WINS or DNS
problems.
