Won't boot after SP2 install

Not sure if I'm having the same exact problems as others.
Checked some of the pages posted in replies - no fixes
immediately apparent.

What happened:
Installed SP2 from Windows Update
Came back to machine to find black screen and HD
repeatedly trying to reboot
Booted from XP CD
Recovery console solution in KB 875355 didn't work
IBM recovery says "system32\hal.dll" is missing or corrupt

Should I try to copy hal.dll onto HD? What is the syntax
in the Recovery Console? "Recovery install" was not an
option. Thanks.
