Wonderful (NOT) XP SP2 means computer no longer boots

Hello

I wonder whether Microsoft did sufficient testing on SP2....

I am TRYING to setup a Windows XP system. This system freezes if:

1. You install Windows XP CD (which includes service pack 2).

2. Or you load Windows XP with either no service pack or service pack 1 and
then install service pack 2.

By the way we are using Windows XP OEM Home edition.

Everything works fine WITHOUT service pack 2.

Components on system:

Maxtor 6y080mo 80GB serial ATA drive

cpu - Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.40A GHz (product code:
BX80546PE2400ESL7E8).

Motherboard - Intel D865GLC with BIOS version: BF86510A.86A.0046.P10

Loaded drivers from supplied CD - Intel Express Installer CD. Noticed that
Native Storage patch for
Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 on CD failed when it tried to install it.
After loading XP Service pack 1 - the storage driver loaded OK.

I also installed the Serial ATA QFE Update [Q812415_WXP_SP2_X86_EN.EXE]
(385KB) featured on the Intel website. But this made no difference.

I am not sure if the problem is with the CPU, motherboard or the serial ATA
drive. Or indeed some other component. I disconnected the CD and floppy
and this made no difference.

I downloaded the Service pack 2 form the Microsoft web site. It was a
whopping 272MB worth - the network install version - just yesterday - so
most recent version.

We can obviously deploy systems with just service pack 1. But I am sure we
will be in for a load of grief when
customers download service pack 2 and it all goes pear shaped! (Thank
goodness for the copy of restoreIT! on the Intel motherboard CD!)

Any help would be much appreciated.

I contacted Intel who just emailed me a standard message telling me the
usual 'try replacing x with a known good one etc'... not so helpful...

How about using a "slipstreamed" version of XP? How does that work? Same
problems or different ones?

Small Note: If you want to learn how to fix/do something, I'll point you to

I assume this to mean SP2 slipstreamed CD. If not - then indeed, try
slipstreaming.

I would have to say there is some component that needs a newer driver.
Which one? No idea. What you have given as components sound compatible.

Without looking anything up, I am wondering what all is built into the
motherboard?

- Is the Video built in? If not - have you tried a different video card.
- Is the Network Card built in? If not, have you tried a different or NO
NIC while loading SP2? If SO, have you tried disabling it while installing?
- Is the sound card built in? If not, have you tried a different or NO
Sound Card while loading SP2? If SO, have you tried disabling it while
installing?

You mentioned the BIO version, is that the latest?
Have you set the BIOS to the safest settings (but leaving CPU cache turned
on, otherwise things get PAINFULLY SLOW)?

Apparently, SP2 has been tested by about 10 million M$ cusomers who were each paid about $10. So you know now whether any testing was done or not or money went down the drain!. Asking on these NG about M$ products is, in my opinion, a waste of time because anybody giving you a correct opinion (like yours truly) will be put down by so called MVPs (Most Valuable Pirates). They are under an obligation to lie about M$ products. For example, KurtS has summarised the lies of Michael Stevens [MVP] on his following website: http://www.microscum.com

Now coming back to your problem, I recently assisted a friend to install SP2 on her home computer. everything went fine except that spoolsv was causing problems so I decided to use my slipstreamed CD of Windows XP professional (VLK version) and evrything went fine. Also, you have to defrag your system after you install SP2 because it is a complete revamp of the operaating system although M$ don't like me saying this. My argument is companies like ibm can't be wrong for not installing SP2 until next April! M$ simply says that SP2 is a critical update, whatever this nonsense means!

If you have all the backups of your critical data then it is a good idea to do a clean install of the Windows XP integrated SP2 version. You will need the serial number so make sure you have this handy. Also, make sure you have CDs (and serials) for other applications such as WordPerfect Office, Lotus SmartSuite, Symantec Systems works, Roxio/Nero, Sage Financial Suite, Winzip, FTP, etc etc.

Make sure you don't have any .gif files of Kelly otherwise this is likely to break your machine. Her face is deformed completely because she misapplied plastic patch of SP2 on her face. She doesn't know this but she never looks in the mirror these days because of her deformity!

Hope this helps.

How did you get Netscape 7.2 to keep a home page and to work with its
bookmarks? I have tried it 10 times ans always have problems.
