wmv versions produced?

Hi,

I've been recording shows using MovieMaker for a couple of years. The
last few months using version 2.1 of MM and previously version 2.0.
Before that I used Windows Media Encoder 7 and then 8.

I'm now looking at getting a portable media center and need to know the
exact version of the files I've made. I don't know if they're wmv7, 8, 9
or 10. Am I right in assuming the following:

WME7 makes wmv7
WME8 makes wmv8
MM2.0 makes wmv9
MM2.1 makes wmv10

That info will help me in my buying choice... thanks...

I see a mix ranging from WMV7 to WMV9, and WMV9 v2.

I guess there isn't a WMV10 yet.

Sounds like the PMC devices that claim support to WMV9
will do the trick :)

I've been looking at that one as well as considering the Samsung YH999,
the iRiver PMC120 and 140. As far as software goes I imagine all three
are identical thanks to the PMC software. The creative is the largest it
seems but also claims 7 hours battery life and you can get spare batteries
so with one spare I get up to 14 hours. Ideal for those 9 hour transatlantic
flights :)

Would you recommend it having owned it?

btw, if your files are already in .wmv format, do they copy immediately
to the device or do they need some extra conversion?

one last question if you don't mind, what rate have you recorded at? I've
got 2GB of British and American comedies I've recorded all at 320x240
at 500kbps.

I have lots of info about the Creative Zen on the Distributing > Portable
Media Center page of my website,

If your WMV files align with the spec for the PMC, they copy over as is....
but most of mine go through a transcoding as they are higher quality.
