"WMS idle not responding" when logging off - possible solution

T

techg1rl

hi all,

i've been trying to figure out why i have been getting this message
when i log off. first, it would take forever, i mean FOREVER, to log
off and even longer to log on.

i am running windows xp - sp2, with office 2003, and norton securites
2005. i have a vpn into my network and it only started happened after
i changed the firewall that i was using. i went back to my old
firewall and the same msg kept popping up. the windows messenger
service was already disabled, so that wasn't an answer and then it
occured to me that NAV has been the culprit of so many random problems,
that i decided to check whether or not the "enable office plugin" was
active. and sure enough - it was. i unchecked it, restarted, crossed
my fingers, and voila! no more not responding message. restart was a
breeze and my vpn was still intact!

soooooo, i hope that this message helps others out there.

Try closing Microsoft Exchange and/or Outlook before you log off.

I had this problem. WMS was hanging up with I would log off, Outlook
2k3 would start. I found that Norton email plug in was causing all of
the problem. I dug into the program and turned off all the email
options and it works fine now.

Hi,
Can you explain this in greater and easier detail for me....not that
savy on the inner workings of the computer and I am getting that same
message. In fact I got mine when I got a notification from my Norton
Protection System that something had been detected and quarentined (not
sure if I spelled that correctly). So I pulled it up and deleted it,
and when I did is when I got this "WMS Idle" jazz going on. Please
help!!!! Thanks.

WMS Idle error: Outlook user was using Word as e-mail editor (Tools >
Options > Mail Format). Could not start Outlook, even after Detect &
Repair of Off2003.
Opened Word and disabled an add-in for Documents to Go (left Acrobat
PDF 6.0 active).
Outlook opened okay after that (i reckon a corrupt .dot file used by
Word).
I changed her setting for using Word as e-mail editor to plain Rich
Text Format.
All okay now.

Fixed WMS Idle

The WMS Idle problem started after I installed Nero 7 Essentials. After a lot of surching and testing I did the following on both my Laptop and Desktop.

Start Nero
Select Advanced Tasks at the bottom
Select Nero Product Setup
Select Setup
Select Modify
Disable Nero Mobile

This solved my WMS Idle problem as well as a problem on an old 16 bit software.
Hope this will help somebody.

WMS Idle not responding ! Some observations:

"WMS Idle not responding."
Some observations:

Upon System "Shutdown", warning that WMS Idle is not responding, i.e. remains active.

Does this occur because MSOutlook, or another program that invoked WMS Idle, has left a live thread or socket descriptor unterminated ????

If so, can this dangling software be tracked down ??
It should be possible -- though I don't know the procedure to do that kind of analysis.

Actually, that was easy to do on UNIXs.

MSWindows op sys design is apparently still pretty sloppy -- like its predecessor MS/DOS.
Maybe VISTA is better, although I haven't gotten that impression.

MicroSoft, where is your pride???
Or is that as ephemeral as your claimed quality -- belied by the CAVEAT EMPTOR "Buyer Beware" poliicies (as implied by the EULA/Licenses -- whereby only the buyer accepts responsibility for effects of MSWindows operating system faults).

Some apparent solutions have been found by users (above comments),
but the implications are draconian.

One user found that de-registering NERO seemed to stop the appearance of the WMS Idle errors,
at least temporarily.

But that means the user cannot burn CDs and DVDs.
What are you going to do about backups ?? !!

Consider also:

For all, or at least most, of the reported dangling WMS Idle faults (mostly upon System Shutdown processing), they started occuring some time after a new Windows XP installation.

For my Windows XP Pro, it was several weeks after installation.

Since I was using Windows Outlook regularly in the meantime,
it appears that the fault is an artifact generated somehow (by unknown process),
that thereafter survives re-booting.

Any more ideas, anyone ??

P.S. "WMS Idle not responding." addenda...

I'm new at these Blogs.

I just noticed that the Comments -- prior my own comments this morning --
ended last September 2007, more than 6 months ago.

I am experiencing the same problem now in April 2008 -- "End - WMS Idle not responding" upon Shutdown.

Has anyone found a cure ??

HELP, PLEASE !!!

Ghostly restart...

PLau,

Over the past 40-50 years,
I've experienced instances of computers restarting on their own.

Your computer might have only logged off .
(Power Light still on, but perhaps dimmed).
A restart could then have been triggered when some process,
e.g. a download and installation, was completed.

This happens frequently when installing new software apps or updates.

Most commonly, I've traced restarts to the computer not actually shutting down.

Also, recently,
my computer more and more frequently crashed --
and then [sometimes] rebooted or just relogged-on.

It turned out that my hard disk was the culprit,
becoming unable to access some files, a sort of Cyber-Alzheimer's condition.

After progressively worsening over several months,
the crashes stopped rebooting --
and ultimately did not permit manual rebooting any more.

WARNING !!!
If your computer is presenting that kind of behavior,
MAKE SURE
that you frequently BACK UP ALL important data,
including documents, images, eMail, and certainly any
other content,
including executables, that cannot be
easily
replaced.

Frequent, comprehensive backups are always advisable.
But, be warned:
**************** If your computer is acting flaky,
it may already be damaging its internal disk's data.
You could lose part or all of your data and other valuables
at any time.

Moreover, if the damage extends to your system software,
you might have to re-install your Operating System,
a process that commonly destroys your entire hard disk's
current contents.

Furthermore, if the disk is severely damaged,
it might be a total loss, including all of its contents.

Back up to an external, large hard-disk or to DVDs,
including occasional CDs or Write-Once DVD +/- R's.

Backing up onto the same disk that contains the original files,
is worthwhile for the short term, allowing easy recovery
from inadvertent changes to dynamic files.
But that alone will not protect you from disk crashes and viruses.

The clock/timer hardware on the old 8086-family mini-, micro-, and PC computers was capable of restarting the computer, even when completely shutdown.

I would assume that Pentiums and the like retain those capabilites,
probably even with better bells and whistles.

NOTE that the computer never completely shuts down,
unless unplugged, with batteries removed.
For example, you know that the internal clock keeps working.

Robby Bloom

Again echoing the call: HELP ! HELP! What can we do about
"End-WMS Idle not responding" upon intended Shutdown. ! ! !

Is there any solution that does not disable BACKUP capabilities
-- a side effect of killing NERO ???

By the way,
how can I use timer- and other event- responses,
e.g. "upon Shutdown request",
to trigger logging, backup, or other useful processes ??

dude amazing help!

hey Robbbbyyy

that was a great help.. no one else has helped me except you!!!!

Thank YOU... the only other solution is to re-install
another version of NERO...I know that means you have to kill NERO
but don't hit your head against a brick wall...sometimes you sgould just move on to another
burner like wavelab or NTI(which is free and works like a charm)

only when I remove NERO...I have never seen WMS idle not responding ever again...which makes me happy!

that's my 2cents and hope it helps...for me..i think my computer is dyingggggggggg
so I'm gonna get off the ferris wheel and get a new cpu...thanks for the advice friend....:)

peace
