WMP 11 won't play WMV files

recently downloaded the free version of WMP11 and since then cannot play any
wmv files either off line or when i am online. Sys Windows xp withSP2..tried
sysrestore, tried reinstalling WMP11, tried going back to previous version
but it is not there..when I try to play WMV file I get the following msg

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the
file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

WMP: You can reinstall it from "%systemdrive%\program files\windows media
player\installer\mpsetupxp.exe"

Thank you for your timely response. Could you guide as to how I accomplish
your suggestion????

start/run, type: <including quotes>

"%systemdrive%\program files\windows media player\installer\mpsetupxp.exe"

Thanks again. That is what I did originally but I wasn't sure, however, both
times I got a message saying it could not find that location. I tried doing a
search for mpsetupxp.exe but that came up emplty. I have also tried to go
back to MP10 but when i uninstall 11 I am told that certain folders are
missing so I can't go back. Just a mess......
