Wireless

Have Vista setup on machine less than 3` away from D-Link access point.

I use the wireless for my test machines and for laptop, never had a problem.
On Vista I am being told their is limited connectivity and the connection
will drop frequently. On reconnecting it is limited connectivity again but
alway`s works perfectly until the connection drops out mostly when not used.

I have used a D-Link DWL122G and a ZyDas USB wireless connector on it both
with similar results. I do not have this problem with XP devices !

Yes, in XP it works flawlessly. Which is not Vista. Have you contacted the
manufacturers of the wireless equipment to inquiry about Vista drivers that
will work with the Vista operating system?

Wow thanks for that Mark, very helpful, bad day at work ? If you hadn`t said
it I might have missed it ! <raised eyes icon>

I merely mentioned the fact to show hardware is good nothing more. Yes I
have checked manufacturers sites no Vista drivers yet. Howether Vista, yes
Vista not XP, did download updated drivers from MS which made little
difference to the problem.

I know Vista is a Beta and hardware may not work, I am merely informing and
asking others of similar. Who know`s maybe even someone from MS might drop in
here from time to time to look, but I doubt it judging by it`s own bugs and
the fact the forum is not pleasing or easy to use.

Thanks for your time, comments and efforts. <thumbsup>

Yes, the forum is not really "Web 2.0 ish" that's for sure. I have a D-Link
PCMCIA card that works without remark at about 20 feet, but have not tried a
USB adapter. The internal wireless card also does not work at all. It
seems odd that even after MS updates you don't have a good connection.
Perhaps it isn't the wireless adapters but is something else?

And sorry about the sarcasm, yes, a very bad day at work, actually. Fired a
very good friend.

Sorry about your day, I gathered something was up. Hope it get`s better
tomorrow !

I do get a good connection when connected , blindingly fast too but Vista
states it is limited. The dropping of the connection may be down to Vista`s
security but seem`s strange ? Possibly Internet Explorer 7 dropping the
connection if not active, I`ll have to check on that one in the help section.

Anyway hope your week get`s better <Cheers icon>

Hi,
Don't know;but if you are using wireless encryption;any at all;
wep;wpa;wpa2; Vista has a problem with it. The stack isn't right yet for
encryption.
Sometimes it'll hold good;other's;just drops. Having that problem since
installed, my short term solution has been to run with no encryption;and use
mac filtering;to keep out the occasional freelance wi-fier. But it's
definitely a Vista issue;that has yet to be sufficiently addressed. Seems
that it happens intermittently;but when I took off all encryption;the link
is stable;and; as you pointed out;VERY fast. But MS definitely needs to
address this encryption issue;because running wireless without it;is just
asking for trouble.

I have seen this problems, too. I recently installed Vista and immdiately I
noticed that the wireless router constantly restarts or resets every few
minutes. My kids complained all the time becuase they need an always-on
connection to play online games.

The temporary solution I found was to disable Link-Layer Topology Discovery
Mapper I/O Driver, Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder, and uninstall
TCP/IPv6. This disables windows firewall as well for the computer I use. The
router has been running fine after these changes.

The thing is that out of five computers in my network, only one of them is
running Windows Vista PreRC1. This one is sufficient to bring down the router.

Dash,
Hi!
Happy to report that; in Vista build 5536(PreRC1) and in RC1 proper(build
5600); Microsoft has finally addressed the wlan issues!!!!!
Your solution worked for some people;alas not me.
But now; they have addressed the issues; and wlan encryption is now o.k.
I can use WPA2 with no drops;or router flooding.
Check out 5536 or RC1- They work now!!!!!

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for the reply and it is good to know that microsoft is doing
something about it.

However, I am running the preRC1 (build 5536) and still encounting the same
problem. Uninstall the two discovery drivers did not seem to help with the
problem. I am wondering if this is related to IE beta 7. I installed IE 7 RC1
on an XP machine and found out that it also caused the wireless router
constantly reset and restarting. With all the beta software out, it is hard
to pinpoint what exactly is the problem.

If it helps, I am using the intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG built-in adapter and
a D-Link wireless D-link wireless router DI-624.

Jeff

Dash,
Haven't looked into it; as WPA2 is now working for me. And no flooding
either.
Hmm; I'm running Intel 3945abg also. Into a Linksys WRT54gx2.
But; then again; I'm using Vista;and my other machine's are XP IE6
So;so far;so good here.

GOt the same problem here, DLink 624 router, DWL-G132 and linksys wusb11 2.6
and they ALL dot the same. The network is browsable but NO INTERNET after few
minutes...

I tried:

1- netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

did nothing

2- removed IPV6 and the 2 layer thing

did nothing good

5- tried my old linksys wireless router (11mbps)

nothin good

4- took an win2k pc the share the internet via wire NIC

better but drops....

5- tried wired directly in the DLINK 624, working... but I need wireless
connection!

I got RC1 and all updates.

They need to adress this huge problem!
