Wireless routers

I don't _need_ wireless, but there are times when it _might_ be nice,
depending on the answer to my question.

Are non-commercial wireless routers (LinkSys comes to mind) what they're
cracked up to be? That is, why have one if it might not even work upstairs?

Do some work a lot better than others and if so, are they well known or is
it the stuff of flame wars to even name one?

Thanks, but I'm not sure it's worth messing with. Newegg says you can only
buy a maximum of 9999 of them! <g>
