Wireless not connecting on Dell X300 laptop

Hi,

I got this laptop from work, it's no longer needed. Nice
lightweight that I want to use for travel, but I don't understand why
I can't get any wireless connection. It has a Dell Wireless 1470 mini-
card, and every time I check system utilities, it says "device is
workign properly".

My question that I think is relevant to this forum is; should I
configure it for "Windows to manage wireless connections" or "Dell
wireless utility"? I'm a total novice when it comes to wireless and
configuring, so any help would be appreciated.

Could this be a hardware problem?

Everything is showing "working properly" but it's not showing
anything when I click "view available wireless networks" despite being
in my apartment where I have a secured one, and about 6 other tenants
have them too.

It's XP-Pro Svc Pack 3 on the laptop.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Rich,

I usually use the "Windows to manage..."

Are you sure the wireless facility is switched on? Is there an LED light
against a little transmitter tower icon and is it lit? On my laptop it's fn
+ f2 that toggles it on and off. Hope this helps!

Thanks, but no, I've toggled it on and off, nothing happens other than
getting the "transmitting" icon. No LED light, but everything in the
hardware device manager says it's working.

Utility (I am using Windows to manage wireless) is saying "Make sure
the wireless switch on your computer is on" even though when I toggle
Fn-F2 to get the "tower transmitting" icon nothing is showing.

Can there be another switch or management utility that is off or
disabled? I've been going through the Services and don't see anything
that's off..

Woo Hoo, fixed it! In the advanced properties of the 1470 card, WZC
managed ethernet was "disabled". I enabled and VOILA, available
connections are there!
