Wireless Keyboard Volume\Mute Not Working

Since updating to Windows XP SP2 and WMP 10.00.00.3990 the volume control &
mute key on my Wireless Comfort Keyboard is no longer working. The visual
display is shown, but nothing happens. Interestingly enough, the other media
related hot keys such as pause/fwd/rvd/stop work as expected. The other non
media hotkeys work as expected. I updated drivers to Intellitype Pro 5.5, no
difference. Rolled back to Intellitype 5.3 no difference.
Unplugged/Plugged-In the speakers, and rebooted a number of times. Not
difference

Microsoft Docs elude to the fact that for hotkeys to work, the default media
player must be supported. Ha. You would think WMP 10 is suported. Any more
ideas/suggestions?

If you remap those keys to other functions, do they work? If WMP isn't
running, do the keys work? WMP doesn't actually process those key strokes
to my knowledge - those are system-wide events, so WMP shouldn't actually be
a factor here.

The volume and mute keys can not be mapped, they are hard coded for the
volume/mute function. The only option is to toggle on/off the volume/mute
status on the screen. All other "hot keys" and the start, pause, forward,
reverse keys work as expected.

Solution - During the XP SP2 Update, the driver for my audio controller was
changed to "intergrated Intel audio". I downloaded the SigmaTel driver from
Dell, and installed it. For some reason after the installation (and forced
reboot) the driver was not enabled. After manually enabling the device (and
rebooting again, who said XP has less reboots then NT?) I am now able to use
the volume up/down and mute keys on my keyboard.

Lastly, I attempted to contact MSFT for support on the hardware side,
however the product key I entered (right off the back of the keyboard) would
not match any of the "supported products". The product key seems to be mapped
to "Optical Wireless Desktop 3.0", and the clostest supported product choice
is "Optical Wireless Desktop 2.0". To think I can't get support (within my 90
days of purchase) because my rev is actually higher, rediculous. Microsoft
shouldn't even bother putting up the facade that they support hardware. What
a joke!

tHey, don't know if you've gotten this fixed yet, but i had the same problem.
I think my problem was that i was using an external sound card. As soon as i
switched the default sound device back to the computer's onboard sound card,
the keyboard controlled the volume just fine. It doesn't matter if i'm using
Intellitype 5.5 or 5.2. Hope that helps. If you or anyone else has found a
way to have your keyboard volume controls work with an external sound card,
let me know, cause the sound from the external card is much better than the
onboard card.
