Wireless is Slow

I have two laptops one runs XP the other Vista, connecting wirelessly
to a Linksys WA54GS router.

On the XP laptop I can download at roughly 2000 kbps but on the Vista
laptop the best I can do is a measly 800 kbps.

Both laptops are within 10ft of the router with no obstructions, and I
am updating every day from Windows Updates.

I tried turning off the firewall, and turning off IPv6 but these made
no difference.

Anyone know how I can get my wireless speed up?

the router running the latest firmware?

No better I'm afraid - still less than half the expected speed. I
actually attached the Ethernet cable because the wireless connection
was slow. I also tried turning off the autotune but again it's still
very slow. Here's the output of ipconfig /all after a reboot with the

Ok tried it but it wasn't any better.
how are you testing the wireless?

Initially I noticed there was a problem when the Media Center software
on my Xbox 360 was very slow. Then I tried using the speed tester on
my ISP's web page which downloads a file to your computer and reports
the d/l speed. After that I tried connecting the Ethernet cable and
testing the XP computer to determine that the problem was with the
wireless.

Since my last message I've had a chance to try another router (Netgear
DG834GT) and the performance is no better, but curiously this router
has a 108 Mbs USB wireless dongle and when I use that the speed shoots
up, and is very acceptable.

So the problem appears to be in the wireless interface on the
computer, but at the moment I can't think of anything else to try.

please go into device manager and get the version #/dates of the
driver components for the Atheros wireless.

The driver is 7.3.1.61 dated 14/7/2007. The device manager reports
that this is the most up to date driver however tonight I found
7.3.1.109 on the Toshiba website. I gave it a try but it didn't help,
and might even have been slower. There are no conflicts reported in
the device manager dialog, and it also says that the device is working
correctly. Tricky isn't it :)

Interesting, there was an update on WU for my Ferrari 5000 Atheros
AR5006EXS NIC in the past 2 weeks or so - 7.3.1.127. Atheros
provides a universal driver that covers all of their chipsets (but
some vendors, (including apparently Toshiba) opt out of having this
universal driver cover wireless NICs in their laptops.

If you do a Google search for

atheros 7.3.1.127 driver

you'll find several sources like

Interesting, there was an update on WU

WU ?

Thanks again. I installed it and ... well you know what I'm going to
say ... no speed increase - I'm still only getting around 600 kbps.

So, it doesn't look like it's the router (because I've tried two),
ethernet connection works fine, the plug in wireless interface worked
fine, I've tried three drivers and now have the latest one installed -
I'm starting to wonder whether the NIC is at fault, or can you think
of something more to try in the software?

can you open a cmd prompt and do a tracert yahoo.com and post the

one last thing to try (and then I am out of ideas)

delete the Atheros NIC in device manager (but leave the driver). do
a cold shut down. Vista should redetect and rebuild the stack.

Okay one final thing - I'm a Vista newbie so can you tell me how to do
that? In device manager I have options to disable the device and to
uninstall the driver, but not to delete.
