For the 10 minute disconnects:
If your network does not use an authentication server (a "master" computer
set up specifically for authenticating clients), you will see a drop about
every 10 minutes. To fix: In XP's wireless config tool look into the
properties for the connection. On the Authentication page, uncheck the box
for "...IEEE 802.2x authentication..."

Hardware question. No 'master computer' is needed. What with nearly all
wireless routers containing a DHCP server on a chip. Any settings must be
made through the software provided with the wireless card and/or wireless
router. (Some even branded Microsoft.)

This particular setting (IEEE 802.2x authentication) is enabled by default
for wireless connectoids in Network Connections. It is not DHCP but an
additional form of authentication. Turning it off still allows DHCP in
routers to function as expected - no unexpected disconnects. If left
enabled and when it times out (after about 10 minutes), the wireless
connection is dropped when authentication fails.
