Wireless connection unavailable

inserting a linksys wpc54g card into a Dell inspiron
laptop pc card slot gives connection unavailable status.
The wireless adapter properties box says that the device
is working properly, enabled and no conflicts. Disabling
the device puts the icon into grey and shows disabled,
returning to enabled lights up the icon with red cross
and notification that the connection failed. There are no
bridge connections, but the wireless connection is at
index 4. Apart from not being able to access the wireless
adapter the system is behaving normally.

I have contacted the Linksys help desk to check the
adapter side of the problem. A "known to be working" card
produced the same result. I have used both pc slots.
uninstalled driver and let new hardware wizard to
reinstall driver. Used system restore and then tried to
install adapter. Same result.
Looking through system information/network/adapter
the "RAS Async Adapter" does not list a driver.
admin tools/system tools/system error NeBT event 4311
initalization failed because the device could not be
created.

Has anyone got got ideas?

Does your LAN applies a Hidden AP protocol [ I forgot what is the formal
name :) ] or MAC filtering ?

Also have you disabled the Windows XP control over the card and use the
control s/ware from the card ?
sometimes the 0-config function of XP actually mess things up.

Lastly ... is there a chance your AP is not properly working ?
[or your NIC can't goto 11b protocol ( which is impossible, but might
happen) ]

Hi, Bob
When in network connections the wireless network
connection is lit up with red cross showing connection
unavailable. If I disable the connection the icon goes
grey and signals disabled. Returning to enable gives
connection unavailable, icon lit up, but with brief
warning connection failed. I am at wireless connection 4,
trying the known working card pushed this number up to 5,
but I am back with my own card and system returned to
number 4. Even winding back with system retore and
reinstalling giving a connection without any suffix still
gives the same result.
I uninstalled the supplied software supplied by Linksys
as they it wasn't needed for operation as Win XP is
installed. All parts of the system report back that they
are OK and working, but impossible to enable wireless
connection.
