WinZip vs. XP zip

I have found the the XP zip utility does not unzip files
with certain names that WinZip will unzip. Has anyone
else see this issue and is it a "feature" or a bug? Any
feedback would be appreciated.

WINZip will handle a lot more files than XP. XP only will understand the
files with "*.zip" extension. It is not a bug.

Yves,

Thanks for the input. However, I was talking about files
within the zip archive not being recognized. For example
I had a series of files and one of the files had the
name "Asm, mount-bracket.sldasm". When I extracted the
files from the zip archive, that file had not been
extracted. I believe it had something to do with the
comma and space.

QuickZip will allow renaming of files within the archive. Give it a try.
Also freeware.

The included utilities in XP are basic and third party offerings will
usually give more features. Same with the CD burning application, XP Backup,
etc. etc. It is not a bug.

Agreed. The person who created the files has no idea how to name files.

Hmm, interesting, but I dont agree that this is a MS hotfix problem as
MS noted below:

"To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain the fix."

ie the "problem" is not with the update, but rather, as I said before,
with folks who dont know how to name files correctly. My point is that
MS shouldn't have to take responsibility for this "problem".

My apologies for stepping in, Ed as I hadn't read the whole thread, only
this post.(

Step on me as much as you want. My peeve was that MS shouldn't have had
to provide a fix for folks who dont have a clue on how to name a file.
