You can't. The operating system known as "DOS" is not present in
Windows XP. The closest you can get is to use the installation CD to
boot into the Recovery Console where you will find a command line where
you can issue a limited set of commands. But I don't think you can
start the Windwows GUI from there.

What is that you need to do?

Not to put too fine a point on it, you can't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit (and now
64-bit) graphical desktop operating systems, of which WinXP is the
next-to-the-latest generation, has never used, included, or "ridden
upon" MS-DOS. The Recovery Console's CLI (Command Line Interface) is the
closest you can come to the old "DOS mode."

You can't do this with XP. You could potentially get the *machine* to DOS,
by booting with a DOS disk.

But if your hard disk is over 40 gig, it's almost certainly formatted NTFS,
and the DOS disk won't know what to do with it.

The launcher for XP is not titled "win.com".

Even if your disk was formatted as FAT and you booted to DOS and found the
command, XP will not launch from it, for reasons like command.com uses
incompatible and insufficient memory management.

So the only way you could do it is to format the disk as FAT32, or add
another disk, do an install of Win9x or ME, and set up a dual-boot. You
will need to install Win9x first, meaning you'd have to erase your current
XP install.

Well, if you want to name exceptions, there's also

Windows 3.11
Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Windows Me (I think, I'm not sure about Windows Me)

Not if use a boot manager such as boot magic. You can load any previous
version of windows (or indeed Linux, DOS etc) without affecting XP. The
only pre-requisite for using Boot-magic is that there must be a FAT32
formatted partition available to all the operating systems to actually hold
the Boot Magic utility.

In Wndows ME it was just hidden from the user and you have a few patches
available in the www that will bring out the DOS in Windows ME

I have a partition of Me, so I'm still familiar with how it works.
While "patches" or utilities can be used in a number of ways that alter
an OS, in its "normal" state, Me doesn't allow real mode DOS.

That is simply becuase DOS was purposely hidden in WinME, I have forgotten how
it was done but I still have the patch with me that releases DOS
