WinXP -> Win2K server DNS issue

I

Ian Hockaday

I am getting Group Policy errors in my WinXP event log
(1030 & 1058) - I think it is a DNS issue.
In the address bar or windows explorer, the address
\\mydomain.com\sysvol\mydomain.com is invalid.
But the address \\myservername\sysvol\mydomain.com works
fine.
Can anyone help with DNS entries? (or other solution) to
fix.
Thanks

Is the XP client only using the DC for DNS? No ISP's DNS allowed on any NIC
in any domain member allowed.
There should be a (same as parent folder) "A" record for each IP on all DCs
in your local mydomain.com forward lookup zone.
Post the ipconfig /all and the domain name from ADU&C from the DC.

You didn't post the AD Domain name I assume hockadayconsulting.com is the
name?
Did you check the zone for the "(same as parent folder) A 10.0.0.2"
record?
Run netdiag /fix and dcdiag /fix
Is the Distributed File System Service running?

Actually this seems to be a known error and a hotfix is available,
considering the syptoms you explained where you cannot connect to your
sysvol and assuming you're getting an access denied. Read this:

Or this may even help...

Yes, if I type \\hockadayconsulting.com\sysvol\hockadayconsulting.com in the address bar of Windows Explorer on the DC, it takes me to the correct folder

I guess this settles the question if it is a DNS issue, the name resolves
correctly.
You must have something else going on with this machine.
I've seen this with single label domain names but that is another issue and
story.

The only other thing I can think of is a Hosts file that is getting loaded
in the DNS cache on the XP, have you checked the hosts file?
Try ipconfig /flushdns and then ipconfig /displaydns to see what is in the
cache.

Try this, go to www.mvptools.com and download Netdig it is a nice tool easy
to use and even has a windows version. You can run it from a command line
and use the /i switch for interactive mode ala nslookup or the /win switch
and open a window. You can double click the netdig.exe and it will open the
Window. It is a very cool tool and brand new from William Stacey. Doesn't
have the bugs nslookup does, like setting up its own cache.

Does that mean that you also downloaded and installed the hotfix?

That is strange that is occuring.

If IE Options, is there a proxy address set?

Try to access the domain share from the XP again then see what is cached in

This is begining to look less and less like DNS.
Did you try Ace's recommendation?

I'm shocked!!

Believe me, if the problem is based on an error in Windows, they will not
charge you. You would of course have to put your CC up front to initiate the
call, but they will not charge you if it's a problem with Windows. It's
normal for PSS to ask for the CC upfront.
