Winxp user profiles ?? all pointing to source desktop dir ?

Ok maybe I am doing something wrong but this is how I have always
created my "default user" profile on my \\dc\netlogon share .

I create a new user lets call it bjones, I login with that user on a
newly loaded workstation and configure everything how I want
(printers, desktop/start menu options etc). I then copy bjones
profile to \\dc\netlogon\bjones , rename the \\dc\netlogon\default
user to \\dc\netlogon\default user.old and then rename
\\dc\netlogon\bjones to \\dc\netlogon\default user.

This has alwas worked flawlessly .. however now that i have some xp
workstation, any user who gets a new profile on these xp machines
their desktop is pointing to c:\documents and settings\bjones\desktop
?!?! Why ?? This doesn't happen on the NT4 or W2K clients ? How else
can i create a good default profile ?

First of all... why are you using the netlogon share? You should create
seperate shares for each user or share a profile directory. The way I do it
is to share a directory on servera at c:\profiles\myuser as
\\servera\myuser$. The $ hides the share from being visable and the user
can connect directly to their share, without a being able to see a whole set
of directories (other users profiles) under the single share point. Seeing
all those username's makes people think about testing your security, so best
to keep it simple and keep people from easily testing your security.

Now as far as the default. Just copy the profile to C:\Documents and
Settings\Default User. This will make each new user that logs into the
system use that profile.

Mike,

I appreciate your responce !

To clear something up, I am not using the netlogon share for peoples
"profiles" as in their every day profile. The netlogon\default user
is where all new profiles on a network domain are created from (they
are NOT created from the local default user profile i think you are
misleading in that one comment .. )

A local profile in c:\documents and settings\%username% is created
from the \\dc\netlogon\default user (when that %username% profile does
not already exist). My problem is that with WinXP when this default
user profile gets copied down to the c:\d&s\%username% and the user
logs in, their desktop is stiill pointing to c:\d&s\bjones\desktop ..
this doesn't happen on my other clients and is my primary problem. I
guess its probably something in the HKCU registry i can hack around
with it was hoping someone had a quick answer.
