WinXP stops during booting

WinXP sp2 stops booting, on the Windows logo, just before the profile login
screen. In the Safe mode, Windows stops at the same place, so there is no
icons/menues to enter there either. Resetting to original settings in Bios
does not help. I have heard that a Windows repair is possible without
deleting datas stored on the harddrive. There were 2 CDs coming with the HP
laptop, a QuickRestore System Recovery CD and a Operating system sp1 CD.
Does anyone no which one, if any of them, may be used for a repair without
deleting datas. And how to do it? Help would be very appreciated.

Check with the documentation that came with the computer and/or with HP
tech support. Not knowing how they label their disks, I would take a
guess it's the OS sp1 CD.
