WinXp Restarts when CD Drive is connected

Hi,

Winxp restarts on start-up after passing windows logo when the CDROM drive
is connected. I have disabled auto-restart on system failure but it only
blinks on a BSOD screen for a second then restarts.

Take note that it works as normal without the CDROM drive. Also I tried a
new CDROM drive and same problem exist, its original CDROM drive is tested
working OK on other PC. What could be wrong?

Please help.

Internal CD drive or an external unit?

If the CD is an external drive, you may have problems with the USB
ports (if USB)

Possible USB problem.

1) USB ports not correctly set up in XP
2) PC power supply not providing enough power over USB ports. Look at
getting a replacment power supply of 400 watts, or greater, for your
PC. This should give you "expandability" for more drives.

3) Motherboard chipset drivers -- give correct "details" for XP on how
to access the motherboard components

4) Replace the USB cable.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your inputs, I've actually done most of what you've suggested and
none of them works (It sounds like its a hardware problem right?).

To the benefit of all, it wasn't a hardware problem. The system was
infected with the following trojans & worms (Win32/TrojanProxy.Ranky,
Win32/Wigon.AH, Win32 Hack.AV-G) all detected and removed by NOD32).

FYI...I have scanned the system beforehand with a fully updated Mcafee
anti-virus but did not detect anything.

I give the credit to NOD32!!!.

I have had a hideous experience with my
computer starting itself up after shutdown.

It turned out to be a faulty Power Supply
that went on to fry the control-card of my
HDD.

We took the damaged power supply to pieces
and some of the little capacitors were oozing
& leaking.
