WinXP Profiles and ERD Commander

I have a system that was down so I used ERD Commander 2003's system
restore tool. This tool made the profiles unaccessible. I can see
the file names, but they aren't folders anymore. They are files with
no extensions. They are also much smaller than they should be (5MB).
To test to see if this tool was really the cause, I tried it on
another machine and it did the same thing to the profiles.

How do I get these profiles back? Is all the data lost for good?
Has anyone else had this happen when using the system restore tool in
ERD Commander 2003?

Thank you!

I have determined it wasn't ERD Commander as I was able to recover the
files on my test system. I believe it is more than likely either bad
sectors on the hard drive or a corrupt registry. I have been scanning
the hard drive with a couple data recover tools and I keep receiving
bad sector alerts. I have also noticed that some of the folders under
SAM are missing in the registry.
