WinXP Pro SP2 Shutdown problems

For some reason I am unable to shut the OS down from the Start|Shutdown
button. It seems to hang after clicking it on the same screen after
shutting down all applications or on the saving your settings screen, and in
either case I have to shutdown via holding the computers start/shutdown
button in until it shuts off! I don't want to re-install because I'm a
developer working on some important projects and I'm afraid it won't pick up
all my applications, registry entries. What can I check or do?
