WinXP Pro - Can not create new account profiles

Mike L

Hi,

My PC will no longer make a profile for a new account.
I can create a new account either from "User Accounts" or from Computer
Management.
The account gets created, but there is no user directory in C:\Documents
and Settings directory. This is where the "All Users" and my one working
account user profiles are.

When I log in with the new account name, I get an error and an event log
entry:
----------------------------------
Event Type: Error

I have been running WinXP Pro on my home PC for more than a year. About
two months ago, I deleted some old acccounts I did not need. I also
created a new administrator account - successfully.
Then, I wanted to create some new user accounts, and hit this problem.
Please note - I was able to create my earlier accounts and my one
current account this way. Windows created user profiles automatically to
make it work. Now, it does not create them anywhere.

Please help!
Mike L.

No, I don't have "Default User"
I have
"All Users"
"All Users.WINDOWS" - I think I may have created this one myself a long time
ago
"Nordica" - my working administrator account

Well, you need a Default User as this is the template
that is copied when a new account profile is made.
Whether you can just "make one" is doubtful, perhaps
worth a try by copying another. However, I suspect
you will likely need to remove the one you try to make
and then do an upgrade install to repair this (and then
reapply all service). There may be a better way, so
perhaps you should post into a couple other places
asking how to recover from a delete Default User profile,
such as in the locations where shell specialists might
see your issue posted.

Roger,

Thanks! I will try that - at least now I know what the problem is.
If I find a solution soon enough, I'll post it here too.

Sincerely,
Mike
