WinXP Home startup/shutdown problems

Has anyone run across this problem?
Very often (not always) when starting XP and logging into
MY account but not others, I get an error message window.

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe
abnormal program termination"

Later, when I go to shutdown, explorer.exe will hang, and
I will have to end it manually. I think the message I get
at shutdown is "Cannot End Task, explorer.exe", but I'm
not 100% certain. If I click shutdown and walk away from
the computer, it will still be there waiting for me to
end the task manually.

The shutdown problem is pretty much 100% of the time,
while the startup problem is intermittent. The startup
problem also is not limited to explorer.exe. It has often
referred to NAV instead.
The shutdown, however, is always explorer.exe.

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA.
Dan
