WinXP Device Manager USB exclamation ?

P

Patty

My daughter recently installed an A7N8X Deluxe motherboard. Everything
works ok, except that in XP Device Manager she shows a listing for Other
Devices, Universal Serial Bus (USB Controller) with an exclamation point on
it. She also shows the USB Root hub and Universal Host Controller listed
under Universal Serial Bus Controller and her USB ports work. However, is
there a BIOS setting that she needs to change to get rid of that exclamation
point listing? She did upgrade XP to SP1 so I'm wondering if it's got to do
with the USB 2.0 on the motherboard. Can she just delete this Other Devices
listing since it appears that the USB has installed correctly? Just not
sure what to do with it. She doesn't know if the USB is working at 2.0
since her USB devices are backwards compatible to 1.1, is there anyway she
can test that 2.0 is working correctly?

System config:

A7N8X DLX w/AMD XP 2500+(333Mhz)
512 MB DDR333 RAM
Enermax EG365P-VE(FC) 350w power supply
1.44 Floppy Drive
IBM 120MB hard drive (Master IDE 1)
Samsung SD-612 DVD-ROM (Master IDE2)
Samsung SW408 CD-R (Slave IDE2)
Enermax RENR-006TM1-S 5.25" Front I/O Panel Adapter (includes 2xUSB,
1xGamePort, 1xIEEE 1394 & Temp Display)

Many thanks.

Check the mother board maker's site for updated USB drivers or an
install disk if there was one supplied.
HTH :)

She said she installed all the drivers from the provided CD-ROM. It shows
the USB drivers installed and operating correctly under Universal Serial Bus
Controller. I'm just wondering if she can just remove the "Other Devices"
item since the USB controller is also listed correctly in Device Manager.

You have to right click on the the entry where it is saying that, next
choose update driver, next tell it where the folder on the cd
is(drivers/USB2/XP).
Then it will install the Nvidia USB2.0 drivers.

Before doing so this is what you have to do.

3. Installation Directions
--------------------------
Please follow these directions for a smooth installation of the USB 2.0
package.

A. install the QFE
1. Both the USB EHCI package and the QFE (described in section 2) must be
installed.
2. Always install the QFE package first. This will prompt for a reboot.
Before you reboot,
please ensure that you have installed the EHCI Package also. Install
the USB 2.0 EHCI package using
Plug and Play INF driver installation procedures.

B. Install the USB 2.0 EHCI package
1. Click Windows [Start].
2. Click [Control Panel].
3. Double Click [System].
4. Click [Hardware] tab.
5. Click [Device Manager].
6. Right Click [Universal Serial Bus(USB) Controller] under [Other
Devices],
then click [Properties].
7. Click [Driver] tab.
8. Click [Update Driver].
9. Choose [Install from a list or specific location].
10. Click [Next].
11. Choose [Include this location in the search].
12. Click [Browse] to specify the file path where the driver is,
e.g. "X:\Drivers\USB2\XP"( X is the drive you put the support CD).
13. Click [Next].
14. Click [Finish].

Since you have installed SP1, just doubleclick the device entry, and pick
re-install driver. XP will search and find the USB 2.0 drivers that it
already has in its .inf directory. You do not need the motherboard cd nor
do you need to install the QFE referred to in another post (since SP1 is
installed).

I should do this even if the drivers ARE installed and showing up under
Universal Serial Bus Controllers? And, the USB is working?

Yes. You are doing it for the 2.0 part of the USB controller, which aren't
installed.

Of course, the easy thing to do would be to try what is suggested since
something is either not installed, or not working completely to Windows'
satisfaction. :) Then, if it fails, you could respond with more
information since there are other things that could cause an exclamation
mark to be on a device. If it succeeds, you are finished.

But the device shows also under Universal Serial Bus Controller, that's why
I wasn't sure. It's almost like there's two entries for the same device,
one showing correctly, one showing as "Other device". I'm just wondering if
the 2.0 is the issue here. I'll check it out and try as you've suggested.
Thanks.)

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to be cryptic. :) Since USB 1.1 is a subset
of 2.0, the 1.1 host controller would be configured correctly and would thus
indicate this in the Device Manager. The A7N8X Deluxe (nforce2 boards in
general) has 2 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controllers. Each of these
controllers has a Root Hub, with three ports each. The 2.0 controller is
called a Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. Its Root Hub
contains 6 ports. Note that the 2.0 ports are the same physical ports as
the 1.1 ports and that its Root Hub contains both of the 1.1 Root Hubs.

If you installed XP without SP1, XP would not understand the 2.0 controller.
It would, however, have no problem with the 1.1 controllers. So, unless you
installed the QFE and nVidia 2.0 drivers, the 2.0 controller would have an
exclamation mark in the Device Manager. Even after you install SP1 the mark
would be there. When you doubleclick the device with an exclamation mark,
pick the driver tab and then click Update Driver, XP searches for, and
finds, the .inf files that were installed as part of Service Pack 1. It
will find these drivers in its own internal set of drivers and will
automatically install the right ones. You should not have to pick anything.

As I stated in an earlier post, there are other things that will cause the
A7N8X to have an exclamation mark on a USB device, but I would rather not
have to search for that information if it is not necessary - and I do not
believe that it will be.

Willie,

Just wanted to let you know that your fix worked. All is ok with Device
Manager and USB now. Thanks so much.)

Cool. You're welcome. I have been busy all day building and playing with
my newest machine. The new, inexpensive (relatively speaking) A64 3000+.
