winxp, canon ip5000 spooler problem

Sorry to cross post to this and several other NGs but haven't received a
solution to the problem yet.

When attempting to print a document from any program the print job goes into
the queue but doesn't print. It is not possible to delete the document in
the queue and most of the time the computer locks up. Restarting the
computer causes the printer to initialize and print the document in the
queue on startup. There are no error messages. When I changed the spooler
setting in the printer properties to print directly to the printer and
bypass the spooler all programs print properly. How can I correct the
problem so I can use the spooler with this printer? I have an HP5p which is
also connected to a USB hub that works fine with the spooler. I previously
(last week) had a canon i960 installed to this computer and it worked just
fine with the spooler. Seems to be an issue with the ip5000 driver and the
xp spooler function. I have removed and reinstalled the Canon driver and
reinstalled the printer several times, including a download from Canon of
the latest driver for this printer. Canon phone support led me through
several attempts but concluded that it was probably a windows/spooler issue
and not something they could work out for me. I would hate to reinstall
windows as everything is running well and winxp installation updates some
dll files and screws up installation of some programs I regularly use.

I am having the same issue with Toshiba laptop and HP all-in-one 1410.
I even took the next step and reinstalled windows with no result.

Does anyone know the fix?
