WinXP and Win98 Network Printing

R

Rph

I am trying to setup network printing with a Lexmark z23 USB printer
attached to a winXP pro machine. I can see the Network printer on the
win98 machines network neighborhood and when I install the Lexmark
Printer drivers everything seems fine, but when I go to print from a
application on the win98 I only receive an offer to print to a file
*.prn and can't send the article to be printed by the network printer.
Is there a step by step on how to properly set up a win98 to use winXP
network printing?

TIA.

Rph,
I hope that you have installed the appropriate drivers for the printer in each machine. If not you can get them at:
www.lexmark.com
Check and make sure that you have the latest ones, especially for the XP PC.

1. XP machine (With the printer on):
a. Start> Printers & Faxes> Left click the Lexmark icon> Properties> Sharing tab> Select Share over a Network> Also make sure that the name of the printer in the BOX shown, is less than 12 characters long, and that there are no "spaces", in the name.

b. Control Panel> Security> Windows Firewall settings> Exceptions tab> Make sure file and printing sharing is enabled.

***Note if you are using third party firewall applications, such as ZoneAlarm, McAfee, Norton, etc... You will need to allow file and printer sharing, in tools sections of those programs. If you are using a router, you will need to make sure these items are allowed to be shared also.

2. On W98 machine (With XP PC & the printer on):
a. Start> Printers and Faxes> Right click the printer there> Delete the Printer.

b. Then select add Printer> Go through the wizard> Browse the Network for the printer on the XP machine, and add it to the W98 machine.

OK I deleted the printer in win98 but when I go to add it as you
instructed the printer icon disappears from the control panel printer
pane after the installation is complete.
Today I have downloaded the drivers from Lexmark for win98 and used
that during the installation.

****I forgot to mention that you might need to have the W98 CD handy, if the PC needs to get a driver off the CD.

1. The driver software should be a Self extracted Zip file.
2. Extract the folder and it contents, to your W98 Hard Drive.
a. Some place that you can find easily.
b. Once the folder is create, write down its location.

On the W98 PC w/ printer and XP PC on:
3. Control Panel> Printers & Faxes> Add a Printer> Run Printer Wizard> Browse for the Network Printer> Select the Printer> Printer Driver should appear>
a. If you have already installed the Printer driver and software, see if Lexmark and your model is listed> If listed> Select the model there and Press OK> Finish the installation> Run Test Page.
b. If you have not already installed the Printer driver and software, or if the installation fails, in above process> On the Printer Table> Press "Have Disk" button> Browse to the folder that you Extracted the Printer Drivers to> Select the Drivers needed> Press OK> Finish the installation> Run Test Page.
