winsock and ping

I've been adding network support to a target image but with only limited
success, can anyone give some clues where I might be going wrong or what
I may be missing?

In addition to the components pulled in off the back of the target
analysis I've added the following network components:

Network Setup Wizard
Users Control Panel
TCP/IP Netstat Command
TCP/IP Utilities

I've assigned a static IP address (10.0.1.215) but no addresses for DNS
or WINS.

I can ping another PC (10.0.1.63) from my XPe hardware but I can't ping
in the opposite direction.

I have a winsock terminal application that I can send single characters
backwards and forwards between the PC and XPe but only if the XPe
hardware is the server and the PC is the client. I can't establish a
connection in the other direction.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Fenster,

First question pops up right away - did you turn of the Firewall?
If you are working on SP2 this would be required to fix the issue.

Thanks for your suggestion. Since posting the query and looking for
replies I found the solution and it's a bit puzzling.

I am using SP2. I had the firewall switched off in the build (in
Windows Firewall/ICS settings) but it wasn't until I included the
Windows Firewall Control Panel component and switched the firewall off
in the runtime image that bi-directional TCP/IP was "enabled".

Thanks again.
