WINS SERVER in XP-pro

M

Mike E.

Where does one get the ip address that goes in the WINS
server address field in the advanced tcp/ip settings? I
am trying to set up remote desktop web connection. When I
try to ping www.mywebserver.com from a remote terminal I
get "cannot resolve target system name" Also, What
application(s) and what port(s) should I use (from my
linksys routers UPnP port forwarding page) to enable a
path through my firewall to the xp-pro web server for
remote desktop web connection?

Remote desktop requires port 3389 open. If you are using the web connection
feature, you also need port 80.

www.mywebserver.com is a fully qualified domain name and requires a DNS
entry. If you are not running DNS yourself, just connect with the IP
address. WINS resolves NetBIOS names. I've never seen a public WINS
server.
