I am facing a problem in win2000 server.We have migrated a
Windows NT server 4.0 to windows 2000 server. The server
get migrated well without any problem. We have 40 clients
with windows 2000 pro,win NT Work station 4.0,win 98 and
win 95.Now after migrating, only the win2000 clients are
able to connect with the windows 2000 server domain.but
windows NT WS and win 98,95 clients are not able to join
in win2000 server domian. It says that "The domain
controller could not be located".Whereas the windows NT
work station and windows 98 clients are pinging the
windows 2000 server domain well.I have tried adding the
domain name with ip address in hosts file, lmhosts file
etc.But still it is not working.what could be the reason.

Navin,
Check the primary DNS suffix on the upgraded machine. If this doesn't match that of the Active Directory this problem will occur. The primary DNS suffix can
be found by right clicking My Computer and choosing properties. Click the Network Identification tab. Verify that the Full Computer name includes the domain
name. If not you will need to contact Microsoft Support to obtain a utility that can fix this.

Next, on the Windows 2000 DC running the PDC emulator service verify that in advanced properties of TCP/IP on the WINS tab that this server is pointing at the
correct WINS server. Also verify that Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled.

Check the RestrictAnonymous key found on the DC in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA. It should have a value of 0.
Reference 246261 How to Use the RestrictAnonymous Registry Value in Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/?id=246261.

Check the LMCompatibilityLevel key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA\. This should be set to 0.

Lastly, make sure that the Everyone group is a member of the Pre-Windows 2000 Compatibility group.

Thank you,
Mike Johnston[MSFT]

Navin, follow what Mike suggests.

If you can do me a favor and post some info, I can email you directly the
script to take care of this problem. That would be the same one MS PSS would
give you that Mike metioned. (MVPs pretty much have MS' blessing on doing
this without having to call MS PSS).

Here's the info I need:

1. Unedited (please don't change the names and numbers) ipconfig /all
2. Your AD DNS domain name (as it shows up in your Active Dir Users & Comp
console).
3. The zone name in DNS
4. If updates are set to at least YES in the zone properties.

Thanks. You can email it to me directly if you feel uncomfortable posting
this info in public.
