winme to winxp

Is there a way to go from Winme to Win98. I have an old pc and I want to
try to make it work without reformatting. Bill Gates won't let me put winxp
in it like my other two pc's so I am trying to go from winme to win98.
Sound weird...yeh, but remember I'm dealing with Microsoft and winme. I'm
afaid I will get one of those message that says I can't go back to win98
from winme which is "supposed" to be better.

The process of Upgrading an operating system from older to new version is not
complex.

One purchases the upgrade edition of the newer Operating System and applies
that to the older Operating SYstem.

In your case Windows Me is a qualifying product for an Upgrade to Windows XP
home or Professional.

Windows 98 is not an upgrade to Windows Me and thus an Upgrade edition of
Windows 98 will not install.

I have no idea why you should introduce Mr Gates into your story! It makes
no sense.

It is possible that this older computer in itself [from a hardware
perspective] is not compatible with Windows XP, however you should perform
the compatibility checks first.

Certainly. Boot from a Win98 boot diskette, format the hard drive, and
then install Win98.

To quote an old Downeast punchline, "You cahn't get thar frum heah."
To replace an OS with an older OS requires a format.

This makes no sense, unless you mean that WPA prevented your stealing
from Microsoft by installing the same license on multiple computers.

Never having heard anything good about WinMe, your wanting to replace
it doesn't sound weird to me. Going backwards to Win98 isn't something
I'd do, but if you've an unused license on hand, it would be cheaper
than buying another WinXP license. (Plus that fact that a computer
designed for WinMe is likely to be more compatible with Win98 than it
might be with WinXP.)

I've never heard of any operating system that supports downgrades to an
earlier version.
