Winmail totally corrupted

I was trying a synchronising USB dongle the other day, with Winmail program
on it, which is supposed to keep a backup of all my emails (plus documents)
and be available through any PC I plug into.
I have ended up with no message folders in my desktop view, although all
tyhe folders still exist in APP DATA/ LOCAL/ MICROSOFT/Windows Mail folder.

Some ninety of them. (6.9 MB)

How do I restore them to the normal desktop view so I can open them and
addto them?

Since this post, I have tried most advice I could find on line.

I can import my message folders but they have no content when opened. I aldo
note that after doing this import my existing new messages lose their content
also.

I have a dual boot system with XP and OE works fine . I have also loaded
Thunderbird which works without a problem but I have no message history to
export to it. and anyway it does not offer a transfer from windows mail 7.

I don't have Outlook so cannot use it as a go-between. My next step is a
Vista repair but that could destroy my dual boot arrangement. Plus I would
have to start again pre SP1 and updates.

I just wonder why Microsoft made life so complicated.

While I don't have an answer to your Windows mail question, I will mention
that USB flash drives ('dongles') are not suitable for backup purposes, as
they have a tendency to suddenly and irretrievably fail.

Because they can without any warning, suddenly and permanently break, they
are only suitable for convenient transfer of files that exist in other
places.

Better options are hard-disk based iPods and laptop hard disks in
inexpensive USB cases. Note that the laptop cases require use of a
3-headed USB cable; one attaches to the case, one carries data and power,
and the third just provides the extra power that a hard disk requires and a
single USB port cannot provide.
