Winmail.dat attachment

I am sending plain text emails to several recipients who do not use outlook.
My attachments arrive as a large winmail.dat file that they can not open.
I've tried changing all the settings but to no avail. I use Outlook 2003 on
an exchange server.

Check with your Exchange Server administrator; an Exchange Server can be set
to override Outlook's Message Format setting and send everything in Rich
Text (or HTML or Plain Text) format. Rich Text format is usually
responsible for the winmail.dat attachment.
