Winlogon using excessive cpu

I have a Windows XP Professional (SP 2) computer that is unusablly slow
because winlogon.exe uses 98-99% CPU at all times.

This is the case regardless of whether you sign into the computer itself or
to a domain.

The only time this is not the case is in safe mode

I have run virus scans. Used Registry Mechanic...

I still have this problem. Does anybody have any suggestions of how I can
restore my system?

I have tried all of the, still available, tools mentioned on this forum with
no success.

I am also getting frustrated that I am getting no response of any kind.

Help is desparately needed.

Why can't I get a response of some sort to this? I thought that this was
supposed to be a support forum.

My Windows XP Pro SP-2 computer is absolutely unusable. I have run the
malware tools and anti-virus tools, that are still available, mentioned on
some of the other threads.

So far, the only thing that I have gained from that is more programs loaded
on my computer.

According to these tools I should be absolutely clean. I have even tried
system restore to a date where no problems existed.

winlogon.exe still uses 98-99% CPU continually. Sometimes there are split
seconds where it will drop to as low as 93% but instantly returns to 98-99%.

Processes that should take seconds take hours in this state. Others simply
timeout.

I have data in Outlook and elsewhere that I need to burn to a disk before I
reformat the hard drive (which seems to be about the only remedy left), but I
haven't had any success doing so.

I need help!

I had basically the same problem. I was desperate and trying anything I could
think of to make it stop. Then, on a whim, I deactivated Windows Messenger.
That little green icon I always ignored, at the bottom of the screen. I told
it not to log in, not to initiallize at startup. Just GO AWAY! When I
rebooted my computer...it was over. I can't explain why. I can only tell you
it worked.

Then, just for the hell of it, I reinstalled IE 7. I have not had the
problem since.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately that did not work for me.

Nothing works. I guess I have no choice but to relegate this as a secondary
hard drive on a new computer that I now have to purchase.
