WININET.dll

I downloaded IE 7 Beta 3 yesterday. It totally crashed my admin account, as
every time I attempt to log into it, Windows Explorer crashes, giving an
error message, and asking me to send a report.

Through hours of testing and attempting to figure out what the hell
Microsoft screwed up now, I've tracked the problem down to WININET.dll. I
have obtained (legally) a fresh copy of this file, and now all I need to do
is get it into Windows\System32. However, this is not as easy as it might
seem. I can;'t delete it or overwrite it with my non-admin profile. I can
pull-up the cmd prompt in my other profile, and I have attempted XCOPY and
DEL, but neither have worked. I've actually got the new WININET.dll file
copied onto my admin desktop. I even attempted to XCOPY it from there to
Windows\System32, but got a "Sharing Violation". I then tried to outright
delete the file with DEL, but that gave me access denied. Access denied!?
From the admin account!? That's screwed-up. Anyway, how can I get my new
WININET.dll file to Windows\System32 and overwrite or delete the old one?

1. Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
2. In the Command Prompt window type: SFC /SCANNOW
and hit enter. Have your Windows XP CD available.

After running SFC:

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
System Information > View > System History

Actually, it's not. It's normal behaviour: the file is open by the OS.

Try doing this in Safe Mode, or from the Recovery Console.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, but I've uncovered a new
problem. It's not recognizing my admin account, probably b/c it can't
initiate Windows Explorer, so I'm never really logged-in on that account.
the sfc requires an admin account. Is there a way I can shift admin status
from my old profile to the new one? I can't access the start menu on my
admin profile, so this is where the tricky part comes in...

Hm, I've never attempted to get into Safe Mode or the Recovery Console in XP,
so how do I do that? I knew how to do it in 98, but it seems different with
XP, so, can anyone elaborate?

Get into Safe Mode in XP the same way you did with Win98. Do this by
repeatedly tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get
you to the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not
work here.

To get to the Recovery Console, boot your computer from the XP cd. You may
need to change the boot order in the BIOS so the machine looks to the
optical drive first.

I tried Safe Mode (I had treid F8 before, but now I finally figured out where
to go from there; turns out I had to select some sort of LAN thingy, and then
I got the options for Safe Mode and such), and I guess it's just too major a
file for Safe Mode.

Now, would I be able to utilize the Recovery Console while in Safe Mode? Or
is that too major as well?

Do you understand what a beta version of software is? It's incomplete
software, which still has prblems, which is released so people can find and
identify those problems and report them to the manufacturer so they can be
fixed.

Of course it has problems. If it didn't, it would be released software, not
beta software. You're complaining that Microsoft has screwed something up
because a beta version has problems?

Installing beta software on a computer you need , rather than an extra one
you can play with, is foolhardy. If it screwed you up, blame yourself for
doing something foolish, not Microsoft.

My apologies, I was just a little mad at the time. I understand that it is
beta software. Anyway, this seems to be fixeable at least, and it's giving
me good experience, so if it turns out ok, I'll be happy enough.

Btw, I've never had an issue w/their beta software before, and had been
assuming that any major issues like this would be caught in alpha testing, so
I figured everything should be fixeable.

Anyway, I'm going to try the recovery console from the CD.

I'm on another computer now. I used the Recovery Console, and it worked...
sort of. It let me delete wininet.dll, but when I attempted to copy a new
one in (via either CD or from my desktop), it said access denied... which
makes no sense...

Now I can't log into either profile. There must be some way to insert that
file though... this is getting pretty rediculous...

OK, but if I were you, I'd think long and hard about installing beta
software in the future.

One problem is that everybody's hardware and software environment is
different. What might be a major issue in your situation may not occur at
all in somebody else's. That's one of the major points of beta testing--to
give the software wide exposure to a great variety of hardware and software
environments, because different problems can show up in different
situations.

Saying "I've never had an issue w/their beta software before" is like saying
"I've never had a car accident before, so I don't need to wear a seat belt."
There is always a first time, and the risk with beta software is much higher
than with released software. Although I've heard that the latest beta of IE7
is very stable, I still wouldn't recommend that anyone run it except on an
extra test machine.

Well, I got a lot of error messages referencing errors for wininet.dll.

Anyway, I was able to replace wininet.dll after I downloaded it to a CD on
another comp, and then copied it in from the CD.

Didn't help, things got worse. I was still able to log into the non-admin
account, but it crashed easily.

Anyway, I was getting pretty desperate. Ultimately, I went into Safe Mode
and used the admin account from there to XCOPY from the cmd prompt all my
vital docs to the C:\ directory, as I'd heard that my docs and the desktop
might get wiped from doing a system restore from the XP disc.

Anyway, I did a System Restore from the XP disc, and to my amazement, it has
completely fixed my problem, and left MyDocs and my desktop in tact.

So, I'm actually pretty happy atm, and plan to keep away from beta stuff
from Microsoft for quite awhile.

Btw, I think I figured out what the problem was. I only exited Mcaffee, and
I don't think that I deactivated it entirely... and not until after I started
having problems did I hear that Mcaffee is the main thing that causes
problems w/IE 7 Beta 3. Curse Mcaffee! Twere it not for AOL, I'd have gone
Norton.

Anyway, I actually learned a lot from all this, so ultimately I'm happy.

Also, my System Restore was on, but b/c I couldn't get onto a full admin
account, I couldn't activate it (even SafeMode didn't seem to be working for
it).

Anyway, thx for all your help and suggestions, they've helped greatly.
