Wings3D polygon mesh modeler v0.98.17
Latest Stable Rel: 0.98.17

Release Name: 0.98.17

Notes:
- There is now a pre-built Linux release available.

(So far, the Linux release can only be found in the
Download area in http://sourceforge.net/projects/wings.)

Just as the Mac and Windows releases, the Linux version
is self-contained (it includes a stripped down Erlang/OTP
and ESDL). I have chosen to package it as a shell script rather
(rather than an RPM) to make it as widely useful as possible.

Temporary problem: To fool web browsers that think that the
the .run file was a text file, I have compressed the .run
using gzip.

To pack up the file: gunzip wings-0.98.17-linux.run.gz

To install, type 'sh wings-0.98.17-linux.run' at a shell prompt.
It will install Wings in your home directory. To run the installed
Wings, run the 'wings' script in the install directory.

So far I have only tested the Linux package on my Redhat 9 Linux
system.

Note: There is no file dialog plug-in included, as I haven't
got WingsOne's qt_file plug-in to work reliably on my Redhat 9
system (using the Gnome desktop). Any help from you Linux gurus
out there would be appreciated. Ideally, I would want to distribute
a file dialog plug-in that would work on as many Linux systems as
possible. (It could be based on QT or GTK or whatever.)

- Updated the information line to make it clearer and conserve space.
(Thanks to PuzzledPaul.)

- Updated help text for Help|Advanced Menus from PuzzledPaul.

- The OpenGL renderer will now always name the rendered image
"<>"; when rendering again the previous rendering
will be replaced. To keep a rendered image, rename it before
rendering again.

- The Scale Uniform command now accepts MMB as well as RMB to pick the
point to scale from. The Rotate, Scale Axis, Scale Radial, and
Flatten commands had their MMB and RMB functions swapped. (So that,
in general, selecting only an axis will be done using RMB.)
(Thanks to wasamonkey.)

- The Move, Extrude, and Extract commands now move along the
selection's
normal when MMB is clicked.

- Fixed a problem with a bevel operation being incorrectly limited.
(Problem reported by PuzzledPaul.)

- Extract Region + RMB would leave a ghost selection.
(Problem reported by PuzzledPaul.)

- There used to be a crash when loading a wings file where
a face had material which had no definition in the file
(this is not supposed to happen in the first place, but...).
Now silently replacing such materials with the default
material. (Problem reported by wasamonkey.)

- Select|Edge Loop|Edge Loop to Region is now trying harder to
do something sensible when multiple edge loops are selected.
First of all, if the edge loops are in different sub-objects
(objects that have been Combined), each sub-object will be
considered separately. In every sub-object, the smallest collection
of faces sandwhiched between one or more edge loop will be selected.
(Problem reported by wasamonkey.)

- Fixed a problem with a bevel operation being incorrectly limited.
(Problem reported by PuzzledPaul.)

- Fixed bug which made it possible to select the virtual mirror face.
(Problem reported by xr4y.)

- Subdivide (in the face pop-up menu) is again called Tesselate.
Sorry for the confusion my previous renaming caused.

- Internal changes and improvements in various places by Dan and Raimo.

Wings3D polygon mesh modeler v0.98.17b
Development Rel: 0.98.17b

Release Name: 0.98.17b

Notes:
Known problem: Hotkeys and temporary selections don't always mix well
in this release (or in previous releases). I plan to do some rewriting
for an upcoming release.

- In proxy mode, the cage would disappear for objects in vertex mode
after the first operation. (Problem reported by MrBraun.)

- Fixed a glitch when exiting proxy mode for vertex-colored
objects. (Thanks to MrBraun/PC.)

- The "Colors to Materials" command would crash if not
all vertices had vertex colors.
(Problem reported by wasamonkey.)

- Hotkeys assigned to the Scale or Rotate commands would not work
on a temporary selection. (Problem reported by sinistergfx.)
NOTE: Although this case works, there are other problems with
hotkeys and temporary selections.

- The wireframe in non-workmode would disappear when executing
non-interactive commands (such as Collapse).
(Problem reported by extrudeface.)

- Attempting to export to Nendo format an object having only vertex
colors on some vertices would crash. (Problem reported by Garboard.)

- It was possible to undo past the opening a file. Example: open File
A,
Open File B; Undo brings up the model from file A but keeps the file
name from File B, so if you save you overwrite File B. Ouch.
(Problem reported by Asthane.)

- Highlights in body mode will now also appear stippled (if stippled
selection preference is on). (Problem reported by sinistergfx.)

- The Material to Colors command will no longer remove the materials
from the object. (Problem reported by OwenR.)

- In the segmenting window for AutoUV, the commands for
selecting by material and selecting edges marked for cut
did nothing. (Problem reported by sazeMaster.)

- If the Geometry was in non-workmode, the model would disappear if
AutoUV was invoked. (Problem reported by MrBraun.)

- Wings will install correctly (on Windows), even if the installer is
renamed to Wings3D.exe. (Thanks to lop098.)

- You can no longer force a crash dump by clicking the "No Selection"
menu popup (when dragging a material from the Outliner to the
Geometry
window). (Problem reported by wglwill.)

- Improvements to dialog boxes by Raimo and to OpenGL renderer by Dan.

see below for summary. This one is a keeper.

Guess there should be a link. Get it here:

http://www.wings3d.com/

Also, there are pre-built versions for all the major operating systems;
Apple, Linux, and Windows with support for the following file formats
(another quote from the web site):

Currently, Wings exports to the following formats

* Nendo (NDO)
* 3D Studio (3DS)
* Wavefront (OBJ)
* VRML (WRL)
* Hash:Animation Master (MDL)
* FBX through a separate plug-in
* Yafray
* PovRay 3.5; currently as a separate plug-in

and it imports the following formats

* Nendo (NDO)
* 3D Studio (3DS)
* Wavefront (OBJ)
* Adobe Illustrator (AI)

So that rendering your animations with Blender is a rather difficult
process of conversion using multiple steps (possible freeware examples
include exporting to Hash, importing to hamaPatch and then to DXF: or
also using Python scripting from OBJ directly into Blender). Once
you've got the geometry into the application though, it (the geometry)
flys.

System Requirements (for wings)

* Windows: Any version; OpenGL required.
* Mac OS X: 10.2 or higher required (Jaguar or Panther). There is
no Mac OS 9 version.
* Linux: Open GL or Mesa required.
* Other Unix: OpenGL required; you'll need to build from source.
