Ok I know I have never had a problem reinstalling windows before. Now
with a new AMD processor and motherboar I cannot reinstall windows XP
at all. It simply restarts the computer 10 seconds after I hit enter
or "r". There's no liscense agreement. i can get into safe mode and
such but it doesn't boot up normally. I know that's not supposed to
happen. i don't know what to do. COmp usa said after they installed
everything with the new motherboard that I would just have to reinstall

windows. "That's simple" i said.

10 hours later I'm stuck perplexed and frustrated.

windows xp hoe edition.
AMD 37000 64
2 gigs ram.
on-board video for now.

one more thing it si a retail copy. built my own pc several years ago.
the thing compusa said is that since I went from a pentium to an AMD
it may cause problems. Didn't think it would not allow me to reinstall.

So to clarify, you had your copy of windows running on a completely different
motherboard, and then you switched motherboards and processors, you are
reinstalling windows overtop of itself? And are you starting the
reinstallation process from within windows or from startup using the windows
CD ROM?

I think you can start the reinstall process from windows but I don't
recommend it. To do so hit run then select your cd rom drive and there
should be a setup file. What I would do in your situation however is make a
backup image of your drive, or save all information that you want to keep and
then do an install from the cd rom. Even if you don't reformat you can loose
some information when you reinstall windows such as saved emails. However it
sounds like you are haveing trouble getting your computer to boot from the CD
ROM, although I may be mistaken.

If you are not getting the cd rom booting up altogether here are a few
things you can try... 1a) There should be a button you can press on startup
to get the computer to boot from your CD ROM first, or give you a list of
drives to boot from... on my motherboard it is F8. This should be in the
instructions that came with your motherboard 1b) If you go into your
motherboard's setup you can change the order the drives boot up in... change
it so it goes to your cd rom before your hard drive. 1c) You can find
windows xp setup disk files on the internet...
